A day in the life of…
Jessica Templeton-King, Assistant Portfolio Manager
Joined Saunderson House in 2015
I graduated from The University of Sheffield with a degree in Economics and Politics, and whilst I always wanted to work in finance in the City, I was undecided as to which route to take. I was fortunate to know someone who already worked at Saunderson House and based on their recommendation, I joined as a trainee in 2015. I initially joined the firm on the financial planning side of the company, but once I had completed the Chartered Financial Planning exams, I decided to transfer to work for the Discretionary Management Service (DMS) team. Saunderson House are very supportive in decisions to move to different departments within the firm, which is a very desirable attribute when looking for a company to work for as you are able to shape your career as you progress, and become more aware as to the route you want to go down.
Within the DMS department, the path to Portfolio Manager involves completing the Investment Management Certificate (IMC), and Chartered Wealth Manager qualification with the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments (CISI). The company provides ample study leave and support, which is very important, as the exams are challenging alongside working full time. The exams help in improving your understanding of financial markets and are particularly relevant to the role.
Whilst every day is different, a ‘typical’ morning would begin by reviewing the client bank to ensure all portfolios are in line with their agreed risk mandates. Market movements, new cash, withdrawals or transfers, can all be reasons to review a client’s portfolio and make adjustments to their holdings. Through this you are able to build a really strong understanding of portfolio construction and investments. Following this, there would be no ‘typical’ afternoon, but a significant amount of work is focused on streamlining processes to ensure we are always evolving by becoming increasingly more efficient (as the team is rapidly growing we need to innovate to ensure we can continue to strengthen and scale our offering). Other normal activities would include; onboarding new clients, assisting advisers with client queries, and implementing any changes agreed at the monthly Investment Committee meeting (which includes liaising with the Investment Team to ensure current views of markets are being reflected in client portfolios). As the fastest growing division of the company, it is exciting to be part of the team.
